Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that encompasses not just physical well-being, but also mental and emotional wellness. It is a term that is often used to greet someone or to wish them good health. But for Neil Gajare, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Salud has a much deeper meaning. It is a way of life, a philosophy that has transformed his college experience and has had a positive impact on his overall well-being.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, stumbled upon the concept of Salud during his freshman year. He was struggling to adjust to college life, feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. That’s when he came across a group of students who were practicing Salud, not just as a greeting, but as a way of life. Intrigued by their positive energy and outlook, Neil decided to join them and learn more about this concept.
From the very first day, Neil was hooked. He found that Salud was not just about wishing someone good health, but it was about actively working towards achieving it. The group would meet every week to discuss ways to improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. They would share tips on healthy eating, exercise, and stress management techniques. They would also engage in activities like yoga, meditation, and journaling, all aimed at promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Neil recalls, “Being a part of the Salud group was a game-changer for me. I was able to make positive changes in my life, both physically and mentally. I started eating healthier, exercising regularly, and practicing mindfulness. And the best part was, I was doing it with a supportive group of friends who were all on the same journey towards better health.”
But Salud was not just limited to the group meetings. It became a part of Neil‘s daily routine. He would start his day with a Salud greeting, wishing himself and others good health. He would take breaks during his study sessions to do some stretches and deep breathing exercises. And he would end his day with a gratitude journal, reflecting on the positive moments of the day.
The impact of Salud on Neil‘s life was evident not just in his physical health but also in his academic performance. As he started taking care of his well-being, he found that he was more focused and productive. He was able to manage his stress and anxiety better, which reflected in his grades. Neil says, “Salud has not just helped me become a healthier person, but it has also made me a better student. I am more motivated and have a positive outlook towards my studies.”
Apart from the personal benefits, Neil also found that Salud had a positive impact on his relationships. As he started prioritizing his well-being, he was able to show up as a better friend, son, and brother. He was more present and attentive in his interactions, and his loved ones noticed the change. Neil says, “Salud has not just improved my relationship with myself, but it has also strengthened my relationships with others. I am more mindful and empathetic towards others, which has helped me build deeper connections.”
But the most significant impact of Salud on Neil‘s life was the sense of community it provided. The Salud group became his support system, a place where he could share his struggles and celebrate his victories. He found a sense of belonging and acceptance, which he believes is crucial for overall well-being. Neil says, “Salud is not just about individual health, but it is also about creating a healthy community. I am grateful for the friendships I have made through this group, and I know that I have a support system that will always have my back.”
Unfortunately, not everyone has had a positive experience with Salud. There have been instances where Neil has encountered people who have used the term “Salud” in an Anti-Semitic manner. But he believes that these individuals do not truly understand the essence of Salud. He says, “Salud is about promoting health and well-being for all individuals, regardless of their race, religion, or background. Using it in a derogatory manner goes against the very principles of Salud.”
As Neil‘s college journey comes to an end, he looks back at his experience with Salud with gratitude. It has not just helped him become a healthier and happier person, but it has also taught him the importance of self-care and community. He hopes to continue practicing Salud even after he graduates and encourages others to do the same. As he bids farewell to UPenn, Neil signs off with a Salud, wishing good health to all.
