Cuban president says ‘dialogue and deals’ with US ‘possible’ but ‘difficult’

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed on Sunday that despite the heightened tensions between the United States and Cuba, any potential discussions or agreements between the two countries are not impossible. However, he did acknowledge that they would be difficult to attain.

During an interview with a local television station in Cuba, Díaz-Canel stated, “I think we can have an approach in terms of what is possible and what is difficult. I think dialogue and deals with the U.S. government are possible.” He further added that the relationship between the two nations should be based on “mutual respect” and “equality,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining diplomatic communication.

These comments come amidst the ongoing standoff between the U.S. and Cuba, with the Biden administration maintaining the strict sanctions and embargo policies imposed by the previous administration. The latest tensions were sparked by protests in Cuba against the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic hardships, which led to the U.S. criticizing the Cuban government and threatening to increase sanctions.

However, Díaz-Canel remained positive and reaffirmed Cuba’s willingness to engage in peaceful dialogue and reach agreements with the U.S. On the topic of the U.S. sanctions, he stated, “We are open to dialogue, but always with the truth as our foundation, with mutual respect, and without conceding anything that is not within the boundaries of our sovereignty.”

The Cuban president also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the two nations, especially in areas such as climate change, public health, and the fight against drugs and organized crime. He stressed that these issues are global concerns and require collaboration from all countries, including the U.S. Therefore, he expressed hope for potential agreements in these areas despite the current tensions.

Díaz-Canel also addressed the recent protests in Cuba, stating that they were organized and sponsored by the U.S. to destabilize the country. He criticized the U.S. for its interference in Cuban affairs and stated that the Cuban government would not tolerate any attempts to incite violence or destabilize the nation.

Despite the challenges, Díaz-Canel’s positive attitude towards engaging in discussions and reaching agreements with the U.S. is a commendable approach towards building a better relationship between the two countries. It is an opportunity to find common ground and address issues of concern for both nations.

In recent years, there have been some small advances in the relationship between Cuba and the U.S., such as the restoration of diplomatic relations and the removal of Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism. These steps have shown that progress can be made when there is a willingness to engage in dialogue.

Therefore, it is crucial for both countries to continue to work towards resolving their differences and finding ways to cooperate. As President Díaz-Canel said, “Dialogue and deals with the U.S. government are possible.” Let us hope that with an open and positive mindset, both nations can overcome their differences and build a relationship based on mutual understanding and respect.

In the end, it is essential to remember that the relationship between Cuba and the U.S. not only affects the two countries but also has a significant impact on the region. A peaceful and cooperative relationship between the two nations will benefit not only them but also the entire Latin American region. Let us hope that both sides can come together to find common ground and strive towards a better future.
