Longtime Contra Costa College football coach Maiorana dies at 92

Vince Maiorana: Champion Builder of Contra Costa College

Vince Maiorana shaped Contra Costa College into a collegiate powerhouse through the 1960s and 70s, leading the school to multiple league titles and instilling a deep sense of pride in its community.

Maiorana began coaching in 1960 at Contra Costa College, a two-year community college located in San Pablo, California. He wanted to give back to the community that had given him so much. He grew up in nearby Rodeo, where he graduated high school, and he was eager to make his mark on the town he called home.

When Maiorana arrived, Contra Costa College was not very well known or respected in San Pablo. Maiorana wanted to change that by building a successful, competitive program. He recruited talented players from all over the area, many from his own high school alma mater, and built a strong foundation of talent.

In 1962, his work paid off when Contra Costa College won the junior college state championship and was subsequently crowned national champions. Maiorana was recognized as the National Junior College Coach of the Year for his efforts and the program received national recognition.

The success continued through the following years as Contra Costa College built a strong tradition of winning. In four consecutive seasons, between the years 1967 and 1970, Maiorana and the Contra Costa College Comets managed to win the league title. This was an incredible feat, as only Evergreen Valley College had matched this record since 1978.

This dominance in the league quickly spread to other sports. Under Maiorana’s guidance, Contra Costa College grew from a little known college to one of the most frequent visitors of the state championships. The college’s softball and baseball teams would also win two upstate conference titles while the football team won the NorCal championship in 1974.

Maiorana wasn’t just a champion builder, he was also a mentor and friend to the players he coached. He was always pushing them to give their all and never gave up on them. He also made sure to instill in them a sense of pride for the Chipmunks and their community.

Maiorana’s career at Contra Costa College was capped off in 1976 when he was inducted into the California Community College Coaches Hall of Fame. He gracefully retired two years later, leaving behind a legacy of success at Contra Costa College and in San Pablo.

Vince Maiorana is remembered not only for his successes as the head coach of the Contra Costa College Comets, but also for the lasting impact he had on the community. His unforgettable contribution to the college and its students will be remembered for generations to come.
