US citizens advised to leave Iraq via overland routes following drone attacks

The safety and security of U.S. citizens traveling abroad has always been of utmost importance to the State Department. And in light of recent events in Iraq, the department has issued a new security alert, urging all American citizens to depart the country immediately through overland routes. This is due to the heightened threat of Iran-allied militia activity, which has been reported near the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center and Baghdad International Airport.

According to the department’s statement, these militia groups have allegedly launched drone attacks in the vicinity, posing a potential danger to U.S. citizens and diplomatic personnel. It is believed that these attacks may be carried out with the intention of targeting American interests in the region. Therefore, in the interest of their safety, the State Department strongly advises all U.S. citizens to leave Iraq through overland routes as soon as possible.

The department’s decision to issue this security alert is not due to any specific threat but rather a precautionary measure in light of recent reports and activities in the region. The safety and well-being of U.S. citizens is always a top priority for the government and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure their protection.

It is important to note that this security alert is not a travel ban and the State Department is not advising against travel to Iraq. However, U.S. citizens are strongly advised to heed this warning and make immediate arrangements to leave the country. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and its consulates will continue to operate and provide emergency services to American citizens in Iraq. However, the department has also warned that commercial flights out of the country may be limited, and therefore, it is recommended to depart through overland routes.

The department’s statement also urged U.S. citizens to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions as they travel through Iraq. This includes avoiding areas of demonstrations and civil unrest and keeping a low profile. It is also advised to have a contingency plan in place and regularly check for updates and further security alerts from the State Department.

The U.S. government has been closely monitoring the situation in Iraq and remains committed to the safety and security of its citizens. The department is in constant communication with the Iraqi government and partners in the region to assess the situation and take necessary actions to ensure the protection of American citizens.

We understand that this security alert may cause concern and disruption to travel plans for U.S. citizens in Iraq. However, the safety and well-being of our citizens cannot be compromised. We strongly urge all American citizens to follow the State Department’s advisory and depart the country immediately through overland routes.

We also want to assure our citizens that the State Department is doing everything in its power to ensure their safe departure from Iraq. We are working closely with the Iraqi government and other international partners to facilitate the safe exit of U.S. citizens from the country.

In light of this situation, we would also like to remind U.S. citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and emergency assistance while abroad. We also urge all American citizens to stay informed and follow the guidance of local authorities.

We understand that this may be a difficult and uncertain time for U.S. citizens in Iraq, but we assure you that every measure is being taken to ensure your safety. The State Department will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. We thank you for your cooperation and urge all U.S. citizens in Iraq to take immediate action and depart the country through overland routes.
