Ben Wallace Reflects On Pistons’ 2003 Draft Decision

When the Detroit Pistons chose Darko Milicic with the second overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft, many fans were left scratching their heads in confusion. After all, they passed up on future All-Star and scoring champion Carmelo Anthony, who went on to become one of the greatest players of his generation. However, one Pistons icon believes that his team made the right decision in choosing Milicic over Anthony.

Ben Wallace, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a key member of the 2003 Pistons championship team, recently reflected on the 2003 NBA draft and defended his team’s decision to select Milicic. In an interview with The Cold Wire, Wallace expressed his belief that Milicic was the best fit for the Pistons at the time.

Wallace acknowledged that Anthony was a talented player and has had an incredible career, but he believes that Milicic’s skill set was what the Pistons needed to take their team to the next level. “We already had a great scorer in Richard Hamilton, so we didn’t really need another one in Carmelo,” Wallace explained. “But we did need a big man who could defend and rebound, and that’s where Darko came in.”

And he was right. In the 2003-2004 NBA season, Milicic averaged 1.4 blocks per game and proved to be a valuable defensive presence for the Pistons. His physicality and size also made him a force on the boards, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.

But despite his contributions to the team, Milicic’s time with the Pistons was short-lived. He was traded to the Orlando Magic in 2006 and bounced around the league before ultimately retiring in 2013. On the other hand, Anthony went on to have a stellar career with the Denver Nuggets and later the New York Knicks, cementing his status as one of the greatest scorers in NBA history.

But Wallace stands by his team’s decision, saying that Milicic’s impact on the Pistons’ championship run cannot be overlooked. “We needed a big man who could complement our team and help us win a championship, and that’s exactly what Darko did,” Wallace stated. “People tend to forget that he was a crucial part of our team’s success.”

Looking back, it’s easy to see why the Pistons selected Milicic over Anthony. At the time, they were a well-balanced team with a solid core that just needed a few pieces to push them to the top. And with Milicic, they found a player who could fill a vital role and contribute to their ultimate success.

In the end, the Pistons made the right choice in choosing Milicic in the 2003 NBA draft. While Anthony may have gone on to have a more illustrious career, there’s no denying the impact that Milicic had on the Pistons and their championship run. And as Wallace says, “sometimes, the best decisions are the ones that are not obvious at first glance.”
