Former Los Gatos High School football star, Jake Tonges, has made a name for himself as a tight end for the San Francisco 49ers. But despite his success, Tonges has not forgotten his roots and the impact that his high school experience had on his career.
In a recent interview, Tonges spoke about his time at Los Gatos High and how it shaped him not only as a player, but as a person. He credits the school’s culture and values for laying the foundation for his success.
“I am proud to say that I am a Los Gatos Wildcat,” Tonges stated with a smile. “The culture at Los Gatos is something special. It’s not just about winning games, but about character and character development.”
Tonges, who was a standout player in high school, had the opportunity to attend top private schools such as De La Salle, Bellarmine, or St. Francis. However, he chose to stay at Los Gatos and play for the Wildcats.
“When I was in high school, there was a lot of pressure to attend a top private school,” Tonges explained. “But for me, it was never a question. I wanted to stay at Los Gatos and be a part of the culture that had been instilled in me since I was a freshman.”
And Tonges’ decision to stay at Los Gatos has paid off in more ways than one. Not only did he have a successful high school career, but he also received a scholarship to play at San Diego State University and is now a member of one of the most prestigious football teams in the NFL.
But Tonges is quick to give credit to his high school coaches and the support system at Los Gatos for his achievements.
“My coaches at Los Gatos were not just there to teach us how to play football, but they also taught us important life lessons,” Tonges shared. “They pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves, not just on the field, but in every aspect of our lives. And that has stayed with me throughout my career.”
Tonges also emphasized the strong bond he shares with his former teammates and the sense of community at Los Gatos High.
“The camaraderie we had at Los Gatos was like no other,” Tonges reflected. “We were a family, and that bond is still strong even after all these years. Whenever I come back to Los Gatos, it feels like I never left.”
Tonges’ praise for Los Gatos High School and its culture is a testament to the school’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals. And his success serves as an inspiration to current and future Wildcats.
“Playing for Los Gatos was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Tonges affirmed. “I am grateful for the values and lessons I learned there, and I know they have played a significant role in my journey to the NFL. I wouldn’t trade my time at Los Gatos for anything.”
As Tonges continues to make a name for himself in the NFL, he remains a proud Wildcat and a shining example of the positive impact that a strong school culture can have on a student’s life. And for the students at Los Gatos High, his story serves as a reminder to embrace the culture and values of their school and to never forget where they came from.
