In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, former President Donald J. Trump announced he will not be testifying on Monday, describing the New York investigation into his past financial dealings as an “election interference witch hunt.”
Trump, whose term as 45th President of the United States ended on January 20, 2021, has been the target of a series of investigations in New York since leaving the White House.
The former President said in his statement: “I will not be testifying on Monday as part of the ongoing ‘Election Interference Witch Hunt’ in the City of New York. This unlawful witch hunt is nothing more than a continuation of the greatest political and political witch hunt in the history of the United States.”
Trump continued by accusing the New York prosecutors of trying to influence the 2022 mid-term elections and calling it “an unprecedented piece of political corruption.” He added: “The New York prosecutor’s request for my testimony is purely a political move designed to influence the outcome of the midterms.”
The former President described the effort to investigate him and his business dealings as “a cruel political weapon” and said that the investigators “are trying to inflict maximum political damage” on him and his supporters.
“The purpose of this investigation is not to uncover wrongdoing, but rather to create a narrative and then to prosecute individuals who are unwarranted,” Trump stated.
In spite of his strong words, Trump did leave the door open to possible future co-operation with the investigation, saying that if his testimony is “ever desired by a legitimate law enforcement agency, of course, I would be willing to answer any questions they may have.”
Trump also criticized the media for what he perceived as its role in fomenting the investigation, saying, “The media is actively promoting this ‘witch hunt,’ as it is in the business of selling fake news.”
The statement concluded with a call to arms for Trump’s supporters: “My message to my supporters is this: do not be intimidated. Stand strong and fight for the values that we believe in.”
Trump’s statement has certainly made waves in the political arena, with many speculating as to its true impact. Some observers have suggested that it may be a tactic to deflect attention away from the ongoing investigations, while others view it as a sign of Trump’s success in swaying the public’s opinion of him, given that 60% of Republicans view him favorably.
Ultimately, though, regardless of one’s opinion of Trump, his statement serves as a powerful reminder of the power of free speech in the United States and the importance of standing up for one’s convictions and beliefs.
This “firebrand” statement from the former President serves to demonstrate both the power of the media and the power of the American people’s free speech rights. Regardless of the outcome of the New York investigation, one thing is certain: Trump is not going down without a fight.
