Every year, InterNations, a global community for individuals residing and working abroad, conducts the Expat Insider survey. By polling more than 12,000 expats, the organization compiles a ranking of 53 countries worldwide. Where can you find the most favorable living conditions in Europe at present? The Expat Insider 2023 report evaluates 53 expat destinations across the globe and categorizes them according to quality of life.
Participants in the survey were asked to assess factors like ease of integration, work opportunities, and leisure activities in their host country. The ranking also encompasses an Expat Essentials index, which examines digital services, bureaucratic processes, housing, and language availability.
This year’s report features two European countries within the top ten.
Spain: A Hub of Contentment for Expats In 2023, Spain was recognized as the best European country and the second-best worldwide for expats.
Since the inaugural InterNations survey in 2014, Spain consistently secured a position in the top ten for its quality of life. The country has consistently stood out globally for its leisure options, and this year it claimed the top position.
A significant majority of expatriates (88 percent) conveyed contentment with the culture and nightlife in Spain, compared to a global average of 68 percent. Moreover, over ninety percent enjoyed the abundance of opportunities for recreational sports.
Spain’s climate and weather secured a commendable third place globally, facilitating outdoor leisure pursuits.
However, the country fared less favorably in terms of working abroad. Less than half of surveyed expats reported an improvement in their career prospects upon moving to Spain, and 36 percent expressed dissatisfaction with the local job market.
Nevertheless, almost three-quarters of expats voiced contentment with their work-life equilibrium.
