Bipartisan senators introduce primary, secondary Russia sanctions

Two bipartisan senators, Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), have joined forces to introduce legislation that seeks to hold Russia accountable for its actions in Ukraine. The bill, which was introduced on Tuesday, aims to impose both primary and secondary sanctions on Russia if it fails to agree to a long-lasting peace with its neighboring country.

The two senators were joined by a group of 50 lawmakers who have also agreed to support the sanctions on Russia. This move signals a strong message to the Kremlin that the United States will not tolerate its aggression and violation of international law in Ukraine.

According to Sens. Graham and Blumenthal, the legislation sends a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United States and its allies will not stand by and watch as Russia continues to interfere with Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“Lack of action from the United States and the international community will only embolden Putin to continue his aggression towards Ukraine,” said Sen. Graham. “This legislation sends a strong message that we will not tolerate Russia’s blatant disregard for international norms and human rights.”

The proposed sanctions aim to hit Russia where it hurts the most – its economy. Primary sanctions would target key sectors such as energy, banking, and defense, while secondary sanctions would target those who do business with Russia’s energy or defense sectors. This will not only put pressure on Russia’s economy, but also isolate it from the international community.

The legislation also includes a provision to extend assistance to Ukraine, including military equipment and training, to help the country defend itself against Russian aggression.

Sen. Blumenthal emphasized the importance of standing by Ukraine and supporting its efforts to protect its sovereignty. “This legislation sends a strong message of support for Ukraine and its people, who have suffered greatly under Russian aggression,” he said.

The bill has gained wide support from both Democrats and Republicans, with 50 lawmakers co-sponsoring it. This strong bipartisan support reflects the urgency and seriousness of the situation in Ukraine.

The lawmakers who have signed on to support the legislation are determined to put pressure on Russia to negotiate a lasting peace with Ukraine. This includes fully implementing the Minsk agreements and withdrawing its troops and weapons from Ukrainian territory.

The introduction of this legislation comes amid ongoing tension between Ukraine and Russia. In recent weeks, Russia has increased its military presence along the Ukrainian border and has been accused of amassing troops in Crimea, a territory it illegally annexed in 2014.

In addition to the proposed sanctions, the United States has also taken other steps to support Ukraine and deter Russian aggression. Last month, President Joe Biden approved $125 million in military assistance to Ukraine, including patrol boats, small arms, and other equipment.

The United States has also stood by its commitment to NATO and its allies in the region. Last week, the U.S. joined NATO countries in condemning Russia’s illegal and provocative activities in Ukraine.

The proposed sanctions are not just about holding Russia accountable, but also about standing up for the values of democracy, human rights, and international law. It is imperative for countries to come together and take a united stance against aggression and violation of sovereignty.

In conclusion, the legislation introduced by Sens. Graham and Blumenthal serves as a strong warning to Russia that the United States will not tolerate its actions in Ukraine. It also sends a message of unwavering support to Ukraine, a country that has been on the frontlines of Russian aggression for far too long. It is now up to the international community to join forces and hold Russia accountable for its actions.
