As Schools Prioritize Digital Literacy, My Students Are Being Left Behind

Over the past three years, I have had the privilege of teaching a diverse group of students from different backgrounds and age groups. As an educator, it has been my responsibility to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in today’s digital world. However, I have noticed a concerning trend among my students – a significant gap in their understanding and use of the internet and other basic digital skills.

In this fast-paced era, where technology is constantly evolving, it is crucial for individuals to have a strong grasp of digital skills. From online research to communication and even job applications, the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. Yet, many of my students lack the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital world effectively.

These skills may seem simple to some, but for those who have not been exposed to technology, they can be daunting. As a result, my students often struggle to complete assignments and keep up with their peers who are more tech-savvy.

The digital divide is not just limited to my students; it extends to their families as well. Many of my students come from low-income households, where access to technology is limited. This lack of exposure to technology puts them at a disadvantage, as they are unable to develop the necessary skills to thrive in today’s digital world. It also creates a gap between them and their peers who have access to technology and are more proficient in using it.

As an educator, it is my responsibility to bridge this gap and ensure that my students are equipped with the necessary digital skills. I have taken various initiatives to address this issue, such as incorporating digital literacy lessons into my curriculum and organizing workshops for students and their families. These workshops cover topics such as internet safety, basic digital skills, and the importance of responsible internet use.

I have also collaborated with other educators and organizations to provide my students with access to technology and training. Through these efforts, I have seen a significant improvement in my students’ digital skills and confidence in using technology. However, there is still a long way to go.
