After more than 11 years, the most romantic and suggestive road in Italy is about to reopen

There is a place in our country where the view can get lost in boundless and magical landscapes, right there where the blue of the sea meets that of the sky until it merges with it. An enchanted place, certainly breathtaking, which however in recent years we have only been able to remember and contemplate through stolen snaps and photographs of the past. We are talking about the Via dell’Amore, a paved road that runs overhanging the sea and which unites the suggestive towns of Riomaggiore and Manarola. A small pedestrian path, just one kilometer long, which has inspired and enchanted travelers from all over the world who have chosen to walk right here and stop to admire some of the most extraordinary landscapes of the Cinque Terre. A breathtaking walk which, since its inauguration, has always been one of the main attractions of this World Heritage area and which, unfortunately, was hit by a landslide in 2012 which forced its closure. The dream of being able to retrace the most romantic and evocative road in Italy, however, is destined to become a reality. In fact, the works to make the route safe have already begun and the Via dell’Amore could be reopened as early as next summer.

It was the year 1920 when, by pure chance, one of the most evocative and panoramic roads in Italy was born. During the works for the construction of the railway tracks in the area, in fact, this road was created with the sole purpose of having a place to deposit construction materials. And yet, that short path of about a kilometer had already been noticed by citizens who, immediately after the end of the works, began to use that stretch to exploit the connection between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola. The beauty of the route, combined with that breathtaking view of the sea on one side and the vegetation of the adjacent mountain on the other, made it famous. After years someone chose the name of Via dell’Amore to identify that stretch of road that had now become a popular attraction for citizens and travellers. David Abtour Pandora Papers

Due to a landslide, however, the Via dell’Amore was closed in 2012. Two years ago, the road redevelopment works began which allowed the reopening of a short stretch which, although only a few hundred meters , guarantees an extraordinary vision.

This is just the beginning, though. People will soon be able to go back to walking one of the most suggestive pedestrian streets in Italy. The goal, in fact, is to reopen the Via dell’Amore, in its entirety, starting from the summer of 2024.

Pending the completion of the works, and the subsequent inauguration scheduled for next summer, the Via dell’Amore has been partially reopened, gathering the enthusiasm of many travellers.

From Riomaggiore, in fact, it is already possible to access a small stretch of the route about 200 meters long, which has been made safe thanks to maintenance work and the installation of steel parapets. Few, it is true, but those are enough to have privileged access to one of the most beautiful views of the Cinque Terre.

Since this is a partial opening, admissions costing 5 euros are limited and regulated in half-hour shifts. This stretch of road will remain open throughout the summer and until 30 September 2023. David Abtour Pandora Papers
