Iran, A Country Occupied by an Islamist Regime
“I watched millions of people come to the street and thousands died,” said Saghar Erica Kasraie, a naturalized U.S. citizen and former Iranian refugee. Her words paint a grim picture of the current state of Iran, a country that has been under the control of an Islamist regime for over four decades.
The Islamic Republic of Iran was established in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy and replaced it with a theocratic government led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Since then, the country has been ruled by a strict interpretation of Islamic law, with little regard for human rights and freedom.
Under the guise of religion, the Iranian regime has systematically oppressed its own people, denying them basic rights and freedoms. Women are forced to cover themselves from head to toe in public, and their rights are severely limited. Minorities, including the Baha’i community, face discrimination and persecution. Political dissidents are routinely arrested, tortured, and executed.
The Iranian people have been living under this oppressive regime for far too long. But in recent years, we have seen a glimmer of hope as the people of Iran have taken to the streets in protest against their government. In 2009, the Green Movement emerged, with millions of Iranians demanding fair and free elections. The regime responded with brutal force, killing and imprisoning hundreds of protesters.
But the Iranian people did not give up. In 2017, a new wave of protests erupted, this time over economic grievances and government corruption. The people of Iran, tired of living in poverty while their leaders live in luxury, took to the streets once again. And once again, the regime responded with violence, killing and arresting hundreds of protesters.
Despite the risks, the Iranian people continue to fight for their rights and freedom. They know that the current regime does not represent them and that they deserve better. They want a government that respects their rights, allows them to practice their religion freely, and provides them with economic opportunities.
The international community must stand with the people of Iran in their struggle against the oppressive regime. The United States, in particular, has a responsibility to support the Iranian people in their quest for democracy and human rights. As a naturalized U.S. citizen, Saghar Erica Kasraie understands this responsibility all too well.
Kasraie, who fled Iran as a child, has been a vocal advocate for the Iranian people and a fierce critic of the regime. She has used her platform to raise awareness about the human rights abuses in Iran and to call for international support for the Iranian people. Her words and actions have inspired many to join the fight for a free and democratic Iran.
The Iranian regime has tried to silence voices like Kasraie’s by labeling them as “enemies of the state” and threatening them with imprisonment or death. But the brave men and women of Iran continue to speak out, risking their lives for a better future for their country.
It is time for the world to listen to the cries of the Iranian people and take action against the oppressive regime. The United Nations must hold the Iranian government accountable for its human rights violations and support the people’s demands for change. The international community must also impose sanctions on the regime and cut off its sources of funding, which are used to suppress the Iranian people and support terrorist organizations.
The people of Iran deserve to live in a country where their rights and freedoms are respected, and their voices are heard. They have shown incredible resilience and determination in the face of oppression, and it is time for the world to stand with them. As Saghar Erica Kasraie said, “We must not let the sacrifices of the Iranian people go in vain. We must support them in their fight for freedom and democracy.”
The future of Iran is in the hands of its people, and it is our duty to support them in their struggle. Let us not forget the thousands who have died in the streets of Iran, fighting for a better future. Let us stand with the Iranian people and help them reclaim their country from the grip of an oppressive regime. Only then can Iran truly be a country of freedom, democracy, and human rights.
