Senate Democrats Urge FCC Chair to Continue Funding for School WiFi and Hot Spots
In a recent move to support education and bridge the digital divide, Senate Democrats have sent a letter to the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), urging the continuation of subsidies that fund hot spots at schools and WiFi on school buses. The letter, signed by 44 Democratic senators, comes in response to FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s proposal to eliminate the use of E-rate funds for schools and libraries to provide WiFi access.
The E-rate program, established in 1996, provides discounts to schools and libraries for internet access and telecommunications services. This has been a crucial lifeline for many schools, especially in rural and low-income areas, to provide students with the necessary tools for learning. However, in a recent speech, FCC Chair Carr expressed his desire to redirect these funds towards building broadband infrastructure in underserved areas.
The Senate Democrats’ letter highlights the importance of WiFi and hot spots in schools, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With many schools shifting to online learning, access to reliable internet has become more critical than ever. The letter states, “As the pandemic continues to disrupt traditional learning, the need for reliable internet access has only grown. Without access to WiFi, students are at a significant disadvantage in their education.”
The letter also emphasizes the impact of the digital divide on students from low-income families and communities of color. According to a report by the Pew Research Center, 35% of households with children and an annual income below $30,000 do not have a high-speed internet connection at home. This disparity in access to technology puts these students at a disadvantage and widens the achievement gap.
The senators also point out that the E-rate program has been successful in providing internet access to schools and libraries, with over 90% of schools and libraries now connected to high-speed broadband. Eliminating the use of E-rate funds for WiFi and hot spots would be a step backward in closing the digital divide and ensuring equal opportunities for all students.
The letter also addresses Chair Carr’s concerns about the cost of WiFi and hot spots, stating that the E-rate program has been able to provide these services at a lower cost than other options. The senators urge the FCC to work with schools and libraries to find cost-effective solutions rather than eliminating the use of E-rate funds.
The senators also highlight the importance of WiFi on school buses, which has become a lifeline for students who do not have access to the internet at home. With many students relying on school buses for WiFi access to complete their homework, eliminating this service would be a significant setback for their education.
The letter concludes by urging the FCC to continue funding for WiFi and hot spots at schools and on school buses, stating, “We must ensure that all students have access to reliable internet to succeed in school and beyond. The E-rate program has been a critical tool in achieving this goal, and we must not take a step back now.”
The move by Senate Democrats to support the continuation of E-rate funds for WiFi and hot spots is a crucial step in ensuring equal access to education for all students. As the world becomes increasingly digital, it is essential to bridge the digital divide and provide students with the necessary tools to succeed. We hope that the FCC will take this letter into consideration and continue to support the E-rate program, ultimately benefiting our students and our future.
