Dear Educators, a Balm for Deep Cuts: Navigating Racial Microaggressions at School

I Remember the First and Only Time I Yelled at a Teacher in Class

Growing up in the U.S. as a female child of immigrants from Taiwan, this was a moment that I will never forget. It was a moment of courage, strength, and determination. It was a moment that changed my life forever.

It was the first day of my freshman year of high school. I was nervous and scared, but I was also excited to start a new chapter of my life. I had no idea what to expect, but I was determined to make the best of it.

I was assigned to a chemistry class with a teacher who was known for being strict and demanding. He was a no-nonsense kind of guy who expected nothing but the best from his students.

That day, he was lecturing about the periodic table and how it works. I was trying my best to pay attention, but I was having a hard time understanding what he was saying. I was getting frustrated and started to feel overwhelmed.

Then, he said something that made me snap. He said, “Girls don’t need to understand this. They don’t need to know this.”

I was so angry and offended. I had worked so hard to get to this point and I was not going to let anyone tell me that I couldn’t understand something.

So, I stood up and yelled at him. I told him that he was wrong and that I was capable of understanding the material. I told him that I deserved the same respect as everyone else in the class.

He was taken aback by my outburst, but he didn’t say anything. He just looked at me with a mix of surprise and admiration.

The rest of the class was silent. Everyone was shocked by what had just happened.

After that moment, I felt a sense of empowerment. I felt like I had taken a stand for myself and for all the other girls in the class. I had shown that I was not going to be silenced.

That moment changed my life. It showed me that I was capable of standing up for myself and that I had the strength to fight for what I believed in.

It also showed me that I was capable of learning anything I set my mind to. I was determined to prove to my teacher and to myself that I could understand the material.

So, I worked hard and studied every night. I asked questions in class and sought out help from my peers. I was determined to prove that I could understand the material.

By the end of the year, I had earned an A in the class. I had proved to myself and to my teacher that I was capable of understanding the material.

That moment was a defining moment in my life. It showed me that I was capable of standing up for myself and that I had the strength to fight for what I believed in. It also showed me that I was capable of learning anything I set my mind to.

It was a moment of courage, strength, and determination. It was a moment that changed my life forever.
