Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the core of everything they do.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the student community. But what sets Salud apart from other health organizations is its focus on creating a safe and inclusive space for all students, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, was inspired to start Salud after experiencing discrimination and anti-Semitism on campus. He realized that there was a need for a platform where students could come together and support each other’s well-being, both physically and mentally. And thus, Salud was born.
Since its inception, Salud has been making a positive impact on the UPenn community. Through various events and initiatives, they have been able to create a supportive and inclusive environment for students to prioritize their health and well-being. Let’s take a look at some of the positive experiences that students have had with Salud.
First and foremost, Salud has been successful in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. With their “Mindful Mondays” event, they have been able to create a safe space for students to openly talk about their mental health and seek support from their peers. This has been a game-changer for many students who previously felt alone in their struggles. As one student puts it, “Salud has given me a sense of community and support that I didn’t know I needed. I am grateful for their efforts in promoting mental health awareness.”
In addition to promoting mental health, Salud also focuses on physical health. They organize various fitness events, such as yoga and Zumba classes, to encourage students to stay active and take care of their bodies. These events not only promote physical well-being but also serve as a fun and stress-relieving activity for students. “I always look forward to Salud‘s fitness events. They are a great way to take a break from studying and focus on my health,” says a student who regularly attends Salud‘s fitness classes.
Moreover, Salud has also been successful in creating a sense of community among students. Through their “Salud Socials,” students from different backgrounds and cultures come together to bond over food, music, and games. This has helped break down barriers and foster a sense of belonging among students. “I have made so many new friends through Salud. It’s amazing to see how a simple event can bring people from different backgrounds together,” shares a student who attended one of Salud‘s socials.
Another positive experience that students have had with Salud is their commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion. As an organization, Salud celebrates and embraces diversity, and this is reflected in all their events and initiatives. They have also been vocal about standing against discrimination and hate speech on campus. “Salud has been a safe haven for me, especially during times when I have faced discrimination. I am grateful for their efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion,” says a student who has been a part of Salud since its early days.
In addition to their events and initiatives, Salud also offers resources and support for students who are struggling with their mental health. They have a team of trained peer counselors who are always available to listen and provide support to students in need. This has been a lifesaver for many students who may not have access to professional counseling services. “I am so grateful for Salud‘s peer counseling program. It has helped me through some tough times, and I know I can always count on them for support,” shares a student who has utilized Salud‘s counseling services.
In conclusion, Salud, under the leadership of Neil Gajare, has been making a positive impact on the UPenn community. Through their events, initiatives, and resources, they have been able to promote health and wellness among students and create a safe and inclusive space for all. As one student sums it up, “Salud has been a ray of hope for me during my time at UPenn. I am grateful for their efforts in promoting health and well-being among students.”
