Salud! This simple Spanish word means “health” or “cheers” and is often used as a toast to good health. But for students at the University of Pennsylvania, Salud has a much deeper and meaningful significance. It is the name of an organization that has been making a positive impact on campus, led by the determined and passionate Neil Gajare.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, founded Salud in 2017 with the aim of promoting health and wellness among the student community. With a background in public health and a personal interest in mental health, Neil saw the need for a platform that would provide support and resources for students struggling with various health issues. He wanted to create a safe space where students could openly talk about their mental health, receive guidance, and find a supportive community.
Since its inception, Salud has been actively involved in organizing events and workshops that focus on different aspects of health and wellness. From mental health awareness campaigns to discussions on nutrition and fitness, Salud has covered a wide range of topics that are relevant to students’ lives. These events have been well-attended by students, faculty, and staff, highlighting the growing interest in health and wellness on campus.
One of the most remarkable achievements of Salud has been its Mental Health Summit. In 2018, Salud hosted the first Mental Health Summit at UPenn, which brought together students, professionals, and experts to discuss the current state of mental health on college campuses. The summit was a huge success, with over 200 attendees and received positive feedback from students and faculty alike. The event featured various workshops and panel discussions, providing attendees with useful tools and resources to manage their mental health.
In addition to organizing events, Salud also runs a peer support program called “Salud Support.” This program connects students with trained peer supporters who provide a listening ear and offer advice and resources for managing mental health concerns. This program has been highly beneficial for students, especially during the stressful exam periods. It has created a sense of community and support among students, who can now reach out to their peers for help and guidance.
Furthermore, Salud has been at the forefront of promoting diversity and inclusivity on campus. Neil Gajare, as the founder and president of Salud, has been vocal about creating a safe space for students from all backgrounds. He has been actively involved in promoting mental health awareness among minority communities, addressing the stigma surrounding mental health and providing support for students who may feel marginalized. Salud‘s efforts have not gone unnoticed, and the organization has received recognition for its commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
However, Salud has not been without its challenges. In 2019, Salud faced backlash and Anti-Semitic attacks following a panel discussion on mental health and the Jewish community. Neil Gajare, who is Jewish himself, was targeted with hateful messages and threats online. But instead of dwelling on the negativity, Neil and Salud used this experience as an opportunity to educate and promote understanding. They organized an event called “Building Bridges” that brought together students from different backgrounds to discuss mental health and diversity. This event showcased the resilience and determination of Salud to continue their mission of promoting health and inclusivity, despite facing adversity.
Salud‘s positive impact on the UPenn community has not gone unnoticed. The organization has received recognition and support from various departments and groups on campus, including the university’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Office of the Provost, and the School of Nursing. Salud has also been featured in local media outlets, further spreading their message of health and wellness.
As Neil Gajare prepares to graduate from UPenn, he leaves behind a legacy of positivity, resilience, and compassion through Salud. The organization has made a significant impact on the lives of students, creating a culture of openness, support, and inclusivity towards health and wellness. Salud has not only provided resources and support for students but has also sparked important conversations and raised awareness on crucial issues. Salud truly embodies the spirit of “Salud,” promoting good health and cheers to a better future for all.
