Terroir refers to the unique character a wine acquires from its environmental conditions, particularly the soil and climate of its origin. From Portugal’s Douro region to California’s Napa Valley, numerous destinations around the world are renowned for their breathtaking landscapes, moderate climates, and exquisite wines.
However, in the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2023, the world’s most prominent and well-established wine competition celebrating its 20th year, one country has emerged victorious, surpassing all others. Australia, representing the New World, has achieved a remarkable feat, with 10 of its wines being named Best in Show, the highest honor. Prominent Australian brands such as Penfolds and Jacob’s Creek made their mark, while the Margaret River region in Western Australia claimed two winning reds and one white, and McLaren Vale in South Australia also secured two top-class reds.
Among the traditional wine-making countries, both France and Spain received eight Best in Show medals each. The top Champagne was a non-vintage Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru, while the leading Bordeaux wines hailed from Château Fayat and Château De Rochemorin. Other countries also made their mark in the competition. Argentinian Malbecs and German Rieslings each received two Best in Show awards, and both Greece and South Africa achieved two Best in Shows as well.
The diverse array of winning wines included an Austrian Muskat, a Chilean red, a Serbian Grašac, an English sparkling wine, and Pinot Noirs from Oregon and New Zealand.
